AFRICA :: Pirates kidnap 12 crew from Swiss bulk cargo carrier

The MV Glarus owned by Swiss based Massoel Shipping was attacked yesterday 45 nautical miles from Bonny Island in the Niger Delta, while carrying wheat from Lniagos to Port Harcourt. The pirates boarded the vessel via a series of long ladders cutting the protective razor wire giving them access to the main deck going on to take 12 of the 19 crew hostage. 

A spokesman for Geneva based Massoel has said that the pirates had "destroyed much of the vessel's communications equipment", however it is believed that Massoel has managed to make contact with the pirates and have said that as far as they are aware that the all crew are together and all are well and unharmed and confirmed that "The ship MV Glarus is now safely alongside at Port Harcourt with the remaining seven crew members on board." 

They went on to say that they will not be making any further comments on operational issues as this could prejudice the safety of those being held. Nigeria´s Maritime Agency has confirmed that the crew include seven from the Philippines together with a national from Slovenia, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia ...
